A Shinnyo Perspective on Mindful Parenting

October 01, 2024

The work of caring for and raising children becomes a continuous endeavor for parents from the moment of conception to the very end of their lives. In a new article from Lion’s Roar, Qalvy Grainzvolt, an ordained Shinnyo priest, police chaplain, and mental health clinician, joins fellow teachers from different Buddhist traditions to offer advice on how to bring our dharma practice to bear on the lifelong work of parenting.

Drawing on his training and experience of the Shinnyo Path, Qalvy, a Buddhist chaplain for emergency services personnel in New York, shares that in many ways, we are all first responders in our own lives. We cannot expect ourselves to show up perfectly or with a blank slate in every interaction. What we can do is choose understanding from within—finding peace in our imperfections and our efforts to make an impact on those around us.

Qalvy encourages us to show up and slow down, to cultivate a response rather than surrendering to a reaction.
